County Seat
Newton, GA
The GA legislature created Baker County out of the Eastern part of Early County by an Act on December 12, 1825. This was the second division of Early County as Decatur County was created out of a Southern portion of Early County in 1823.

Baker county was named for Colonel John Baker,
a puritan who came from the famous Dorchester Colony of Puritans in St. John Parish. Three families of Puritans, including the father of John Baker moved from Dorchester, SC.
